Our Journey

Journey Baptist Church: A Southern Baptist Church
Past and Present

It all started in the year 1900, four men from Patee Park Baptist Church started an outreach in South St. Joseph, holding a tent revival with many converts. Two years later, King Hill Baptist Church was founded from that initial effort. Carnegie Baptist Church was started as a missionary work of King Hill Baptist Church in 1944.

The existence of Journey Baptist Church is the result of the two churches’ vision of better serving this community and the City of Saint Joseph. Journey Baptist Church began as combined congregations of Carnegie Baptist Church and King Hill Baptist Church, both of whom have a long history in the Southside of St. Joseph and with many dedicated members over the years. Both Churches have faithfully walked the paths given to them by God. In 2014 it was suggested the two churches merge to better serve the community of the South Side and the city in general. The suggestion was put into action and became a reality on November 2nd 2014. The name change was voted in on January 18, 2015 at a church business meeting.

We are a church under the leadership of the Lord Jesus Christ and see ourselves as members of His body and His future bride. Our authority structure is one of eldership. The Elders are charged with the spiritual oversight, casting vision and setting direction for Journey Baptist Church. The Deacon Body exists and their function is to assist the leadership, see to the care of widows in the congregation, and administer charitable giving. We believe in the priesthood of the believer and body ministry in the church. We offer opportunity for those who wish to express their God given talents in service to the local church and the community at large.

Some of our outreach activities to our community include, prayer ministry, scripture distribution, food pantry and foodkitchen, The Lords Store offering clothing and essentials, Southside Fall festival, Easter Egg Hunt at one of our local elementary schools, highway trash pickup, and Saint Joe Serve to mention a few.

Our missionary efforts extend to other parts of our country and the world at large through the International Mission Board and the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. We also cooperate with the Missouri Baptist Convention and the Saint Joseph Baptist Association to engage in missions. We extend direct support to God’s Mountain Bible Camp in Rushville, MO and Casa De Mi Padre orphanage in Guatemala.

Opportunities for Adult involvement include Home Fellowship Groups for small group life, Life Groups (Sunday School) on Sunday mornings for all age groups, various Bible studies, Men’s & Women’s Ministries, outreach to our neighbors through door-to-door evangelism, church wide picnics and other events throughout the year.

Student opportunities include Sunday morning Life Groups, Wednesday night activities and bible teaching, youth camps, winter retreat, and youth mission trips.

Our children enjoy Life Groups, children’s worship, Easter egg hunt, Vacation Bible School, summer camp, children choir, and Wednesday night programs.

The recent time period has seen many changes to our property as well to our membership. We have two campuses, the Carnegie campus and the King Hill campus for public ministry. The refurbishing of the reception and office areas, the nursery, children’s area, youth rooms, and sanctuary better serve the needs of the congregation and the community at large. We have always strived to make whatever changes needed to live out God’s will, and faithfully commit to continue do so.
